2015 Humanitarian Award Recipient
Mary Elizabeth & Jeffrey Bunzel
Mary Elizabeth and Jeffrey Bunzel, longtime supporters, advocates and volunteer leaders, will be presented with the Humanitarian Award at the annual event. The Bunzel's journey with JDRF began in 2001, when their son Eli was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 10. They have been an integral part of JDRF at both the local level, when Mary Elizabeth served as New York City Chapter Board President and then on the JDRF International Board where she served on the Executive Committee for six years, and was Nominating and Governance Chair. Jeffrey heads Equity Capital Markets for Deutsche Bank.
Carol Lurie Promise Award Recipient
Mr. Brewer is the former CEO of JDRF and current CEO of Bigfoot Biomedical, a Silicon Valley-based venture focused on optimizing the care of people with T1D by leveraging data, automation and smart devices to deliver improved health outcomes and ease the burden of living with T1D. He is recognized for his outstanding commitment to JDRF’s mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. Mr. Brewer’s journey with JDRF began in 2002, when his son, Sean, was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 7. Mr. Brewer’s devotion to find ways to combat the potentially life-threatening disease led him to become a volunteer with the JDRF New York City Chapter. He soon became a JDRF donor and eventual International Board Member as he realized how technology, such as the artificial pancreas, could become the treatment needed to help his son and others living with the disease.
